Woman, 91, dies after fire rips through house in Moray

A 91-year-old woman has died after a fire ripped through a house in Moray.

The blaze broke out inside the property on Clark Street in Hopeman on the outskirts of Elgin on Sunday afternoon, June 7.

Nine fire engines raced to the scene to tackle the massive fire after the alarm was raised at around 4.20pm.

Crews from the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service didn't stand down until just before 1am on Monday morning.

Emergency services have remained on scene this afternoon.

The fire was not believed to be suspicious and a full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.

A police spokeswoman told the Record: "A 91 year-old woman has died following a fire at a house in Clark Street, Hopeman, Elgin on Sunday, June 7.

"Emergency Services were called to the address at 4.25pm on Sunday afternoon and enquiries are continuing

"There do not appear to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and a full report will be sent to the Procurator Fiscal."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman told the Record: “We were alerted at 4.20pm on Sunday, June 7 to reports of a large fire within a building on Clark Street, Hopeman, Elgin.

“Operations Control mobilised eight fire and one height appliance to the scene and our firefighters worked to extinguish the flames.

“Sadly, a 91 year-old woman was found to have passed away following the fire.

“Our thoughts are very much with her family, friends and the wider community at this difficult time.”
