Woman, 84, allegedly drove off after boy hit and killed

An elderly driver allegedly stopped and got out of her car after hitting a young boy on his way to school before driving off without trying to help the dying child.

Six-year-old Caleb was walking to a bus stop in Teesdale, about 34km from Geelong, in Victoria, with his two older siblings to catch a bus to school in March when he was hit by a car.

Despite receiving first aid from local residents, including a nurse, the boy died at the scene from traumatic injuries.

The 84-year-old driver was on Tuesday charged with one count each of fail to stop, fail to render assistance, and fail to report a collision.

Police allege the woman from Teesdale drove off after the crash.

"The offending driver, at this point in time was aware of the collision, has stopped, got out of the vehicle, and we believe, has then got back into the vehicle and left the scene," Inspector Craig McEvoy said in March.

She has been been granted bail and will appear before Geelong Magistrates Court on Friday.
