Woman, 70, who died in horror crash in south Manchester named

A woman who died in a crash in south Manchester has been named as Joan Spence.

The 70-year-old died in the smash on Princess Road, on the border of Hulme and Moss Side, at around 12.50am on Thursday, July 29.

Police said two cars crashed after one of them changed lanes, then a car hit a lamppost and knocked it over.

Ms Spence, who was a pedestrian, tragically died at the scene.

A 34-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

He has since been released under investigation, a spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said today (August 9).

No-one else has been charged in relation to the incident.

A file in relation to Ms Spence's death has now been passed to the coroner.

An inquest will open at Manchester Coroners' Court on August 19, a spokesperson for the coroner confirmed.

A police scene was in place on Princess Road between Claremont Road and Great Western Street after the crash.

The road was taped off while GMP's Serious Collision Investigation Unit carried out investigation work.

After the crash, Police Sgt Andrew Page, of GMPs Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: "This is a tragic incident in which a woman has very sadly lost her life and our thoughts are with her loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

"An investigation is under way into the circumstances leading up to the crash - anybody with information or dashcam footage of this collision is asked to call police on 0161 856 4741 quoting log 107 of 29/07/21."
