Woman, 67, dies following crash on A76 as five people including three kids taken to hospital

A woman has been killed following a horror car crash on the A76 in East Ayrshire yesterday which saw five people – including three young children – taken to hospital.

Police this morning confirmed the 67-year-old died at the scene of the two-vehicle smash between Crosshands and Crossroads around 12.15pm. Her next of kin have been informed.

She was driving an Audi Q3 which was involved in a collision with a grey Vauxhall Zafira.

The emergency services raced to the traumatic scene with the road closed for nine hours so the people involved could be treated and investigation work carried out.

The 72-year-old male driver of the Vauxhall was taken by ambulance to Kilmarnock's Crosshouse Hospital before being transferred to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow where he is described as being in a serious condition.

A 66-year-old woman and five-year-old girl – who were passengers in the Vauxhall – and a five-year-old boy and four-year-old boy, who were passengers in the Audi, were all taken to Crosshouse Hospital as a precaution.

The road reopened around 9.15pm last night and police today have appealed for witnesses to get in touch as they try and piece together what happened.

Sergeant Ian Thornton, of Irvine road policing unit, said: “Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the woman who has died.

“Enquiries are ongoing to establish the exact circumstances surrounding this crash and I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this crash or who has any information that may assist our ongoing investigation.

“I would also appeal to anyone driving on the road around the time of the crash who has dash-cam footage to contact us. Information can be passed through 101 quoting incident number 1277 of 11 February.”
