Woman, 59, was drunk and waving a kitchen knife above her head as she lay on ground

A 59-year-old woman was drunk as she lay down outside her son's address waving a kitchen knife above her head.

Police attended at 10.50pm on March 24 this year as Janet Burrows lay on the ground singing loudly, Nottingham Crown Court heard.

A satchel bag contained three more knives.

Burrows, then living in Jephson Road, Sutton-in-Ashfield, had said earlier in the day she bought brandy and knives and walked to her son's house.

She could not explain why the knives were with her when arrested and could not remember why the knife was in her hand when an officer found her in Lime Street, Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Burrows, who pleaded guilty to possessing a bladed article in public, did not make any threats towards anyone.

She has four previous convictions in relation to possessing a bladed article in public in similar circumstances.

Benn Robinson, mitigating, said Burrows has been free from alcohol for six months.

Judge Gregory Dickinson QC, the Recorder of Nottingham, said on Tuesday, September 21, police had found her outside the home of her son and "you were drunk".

"You were waving in one hand a kitchen knife and there were three more similar implements in your bag," he added. "You did not make any threats physical or verbal towards anyone; police officers or otherwise".

Burrows, who appeared over a link from HMP Foston Hall, Foston, Derbyshire, has been in custody for six months - the equivalent of a 12 month sentence of which she would have served half before release on licence.

"So you have served already longer than a minimum term requirement (of six months) by an act of Parliament," said the judge.

The starting point for the offence was six months in prison with some reduced credit for a plea of guilty.

She was given a community order for 18 months, an alcohol treatment requirement for 12 months and 35 days on a rehabilitation activity requirement to help her engage with various services.
