A woman has died following a house fire in Caldicot and her body was discovered by firefighters who rushed to her aid.
The emergency services were called to a detached property in Deepweir at 12.35pm on Thursday and were faced with a "well-developed" fire.
The fire was put out by the fire brigade with specialist equipment but upon entering the property they discovered a 56-year-old woman who had died.
Her family have been notified and are being supported by specialist officers.
A spokeswoman from Gwent Police said emergency services remained at the scene of the fire following a partial collapse of the house and roads around the area were temporarily closed but have since reopened.
Work will continue to make sure the area is safe and an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
