Woman, 53, in hospital with serious injuries after a hit-and-run in Sunderland

A 53-year-old woman has been seriously injured after a hit-and-run in Sunderland.

The pedestrian was hit by a blue Ford Focus on Hall Farm Road at about 7.10pm on Sunday while she was getting into her car.

The Focus, which had already crashed into a stationary vehicle on the same street moments before, then left the scene without stopping.

The woman was taken to hospital where she remains in a stable condition.

An investigation has been launched and police have released a picture of a nearside wing mirror that broke off the car in the collision.

Sergeant Dave Roberts, of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols Department, said: “The pedestrian in this case remains in hospital with serious injuries.

“Those injuries are not believed to be life-threatening but they could be life changing for this victim and she is being supported at this time.

“Our investigation is focused on tracking down the vehicle in question and identifying who was behind the wheel.

“There is no doubt that the driver would have been aware of the collision and they have left their wing mirror at the scene.

“We now need the help from the public to identify this person and would ask anyone who can assist police to get in touch.

“If you were in the area and saw the Ford Focus, or have seen a vehicle matching the description without a wing mirror, then please call.”

Police are asking anyone with dash cams driving in the area last night to review their footage to see if they captured the car.

Anyone who can assist is asked to contact officers online at the Northumbria Police website quoting log 905 01/11/20.

You can also call 101 or independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
