A woman in her sixties has been seriously injured following a stabbing incident at a house in Innishannon, West Cork this afternoon.
The woman sustained stab wounds to her arms and upper body and the alarm was raised by a relative who found the woman injured in her home.
The woman is a mother of several adult children and she's well respected in the local community.
Gardai and paramedics attended at the scene and the woman was transferred to Cork University Hospital where she is in a critical but stable condition. She is scheduled to undergo emergency surgery.
A man in his thirties, who is known to the woman, is in custody in Bandon garda station. The scene of the stabbing has been cordoned off for a forensic examination.
Door to door enquiries are to be carried out to establish if anyone noticed suspicious activity in the area.
Members of the public are asked to contact Bandon Garda Station or any Garda Station if they have any information on the incident.
Following the incident, the Gardai released this statement: "Gardaí are investigating a serious assault on a woman that occurred on the afternoon of Friday, 4th June, 2021, in County Cork.
"A woman, aged in her early 60s, was discovered with a number of apparent stab wounds at approximately 2pm at a residence in Innishannon.
"The woman was taken by ambulance to Cork University Hospital where she is currently in a critical condition. The scene is currently preserved for a technical examination. A man in his early 30s has been arrested in connection with this assault. He is currently being detained at Bandon Garda Station."
