Woman, 43, found 'dead in her home for weeks after neighbours report smell' to police

A woman was dead in her home for weeks before her body was tragically found, it has been reported

Neighbours allegedly reported a "smell" coming from the property weeks before the 43-year-old woman was found dead in Annan, Scotland, shortly after 10am on Thursday.

Police and environmental health officials were told about a smell coming from the property by residents but did not immediately investigate, the Daily Record reports.

Police are treating the woman's death as unexplained, but non-suspicious.

Richard Brodie, a councillor for the area, said: “I had a call from someone who was concerned that the woman had been dead in her house for a number of weeks before being discovered.

“Apparently, there was a smell coming from the property and the person said police and environmental health had been informed but that the concerns hadn’t been investigated.

“I was told on Friday, a day after the body had been found. I’m very concerned if it’s true that residents had informed the police and environmental health yet nothing was done."

One local resident said: “The woman lay dead for five weeks and nothing was done about it despite neighbours reporting the smell.

“The door was eventually forced on Thursday and the body was found. People are feeling sick about the whole thing.”

The alarm was raised by a housing provider who then got into contact with the police, who went to the address and found her body on Thursday.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “The body of a 43-year-old woman was found in a property on Waterfoot Road in Annan shortly after 10am on Thursday, 29 July.

“The death is being treated as unexplained but non-suspicious and a report has been submitted to the procurator fiscal.”

It comes as a 61-year-old man who was found dead after his body was reportedly not found "for weeks" in his home.

Residents raised the alarm after maggots were spotted crawling outside the front door on Saturday.

Officers forced entry to check on the welfare of the man, but he was sadly found dead.

There are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death and a reporter has been submitted to the prosecutor fiscal.

A source told the local paper that man had not been seen for "four to six weeks" and now there is a fly infestation in the communal hallways.

They said: “One of the residents noticed maggots outside the door of the flat a week past Saturday and they reported it to the caretaker."

They added: "Now there’s a massive fly infestation coming from that flat and out onto the communal landing. They're dying and lying all over the floor."

The North Lanarkshire Council said a specialist team has gone in and cleaned the property and some flies may have escaped but they will be taken care of by the daily cleaners.
