Woman, 44, dies after being attacked by two dogs in Widnes

A woman has died after being attacked by two dogs in Cheshire.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Graham Road in Widnes at around 5.15pm on Tuesday following reports that a 44-year-old woman had been attacked by two animals.

Cheshire Police attended and discovered that a woman from Widnes was in serious condition.

A spokesperson for the force confirmed the woman was treated at the scene by paramedics, but sadly passed away.

Her next of kin have been informed and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances.

Following the attack, repeated attempts were made by officers to secure the two dogs in order to remove them from the address.

One dog was safely detained and remains in a secure kennel.

Officers were unable to tranquilise the second dog and say it was destroyed in the interest of public safety.

There are not believed to have been any arrests at this stage.

Police have since set up a cordon across the entrance to the property.

Detective Inspector Ian Whiley said: “We understand that people in the local community will be concerned when they hear about what has happened.

“But I would like to reassure residents that we are doing all that we can to establish the full circumstances of the incident.

“However, at this stage, it is believed that the dogs were known to the woman and were living at the address.

“This has been an extremely distressing incident and our thoughts are with the woman’s family at this difficult time.”

Residents have told the Echo the dogs turned on the woman and neighbours rushed to her aid.

One man said he threw bricks at the dogs in an effort to stop the attack.

Another said they saw the woman, believed to be a mother to three children, left bloodied after the attack.

They praised emergency services “who did everything they could, all respect to these gents.”
