Fire services rushed to the scene of a serious blaze in Limerick city during the early hours of Friday morning.
It is understood that three units of the Limerick Fire Service were called to the incident at the Shanabooley Road at around 2am.
A woman, believed to be in her 40s, was rescued from the scene and received first aid from firefighters before the arrival of paramedics.
The woman, who was found in an upstairs bedroom is said to be in a critical condition following the incident.
Members of the fire service spent over an hour fighting the blaze.
Gardai are investigating the cause of the fire.
In a statement, gardai said: "Gardaí attended the scene of a domestic fire at a house on Shanabooley Road, Ballynanty, Limerick just before 2:30am this morning.
"A female in her 40s was taken to Limerick Regional Hospital where her condition is described as critical.
"The cause of the fire has yet to be established.
"Enquiries are ongoing."
