Woman, 40, killed after she was hit by a lorry while walking on M27

A woman was killed after she was hit by a lorry while walking on a motorway in the early hours of Friday morning.

Police shut the M27 near Southampton, Hants, after the 40-year-old female pedestrian was struck at 4.20am.

The tragic woman has not yet been named.

Hampshire police are now appealing for information and witnesses as they investigate her death, which happened on the westbound carriageway between junction two and three.

A police spokeswoman confirmed the death and asked for help to find out how she lost her life.

"Officers were called at around 4.20am to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a lorry on the M27," she said.

"The 40-year-old female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

"The lorry driver was uninjured.

"Investigations into the exact circumstances of the collision are ongoing.

"We are keen to speak to any motorists who were driving along this stretch of the M27 around the time of the incident and may have seen anything or has dash cam footage."

Diversions were in place northbound towards Romsey while the motorway was closed for around eight hours.

Meanwhile the Highways Agency also warned motorists of ducks on the motorway between junctions three and four.
