Woman, 37, found dead in flat led to six month investigation

The death of a 37-year-old woman who was found in a Walton flat led to a six month investigation by police.

The victim was found in an upstairs flat on Walton Road on February 28, with the property sealed off for days after.

Today, six months after the incident, police said they had finished their investigation and the case had been passed to the city's coroner. The incident has now been deemed "non-suspicious".

At the time, a 34-year-old man, known to the woman, was arrested on suspicion of murder as police described her death as "unexplained". He was released without charge.

A post mortem examination was carried out, but the results were inconclusive so further tests were needed.

A cause of death is yet to be disclosed although it is understood the evidence now points to no criminal activity having taken place.

Officers spent days at the flat, above a fast food outlet, which has an entrance on the adjoining side street, Langham Street.

Nearby businesses were asked for CCTV as investigators attempted to piece together any significant movements to and from the property within the weeks leading to the woman's sudden death.

In a previous statement, Detective Chief Inspector Paul Speight, of Merseyside Police, said: “The death of the woman is currently being treated as unexplained.

"The results are the post mortem were inconclusive and further tests will now be carried out to establish the cause of death.

“A 34 year-old man was arrested and interviewed and he has now been released on bail."
