Woman, 33, leaves friend with carpet burns after brutal drunken assault at flat

A woman was left with injuries including a chipped tooth and carpet burns after being drunkenly assaulted by a friend

Nicola Patterson had let Leanne Todd stay the night with her in Edinburgh, Scotland, on July 15 last year, a court heard.

But the pair got into an argument after drinking together, which escalated into a physical fight, reports the Daily Record.

Ms Patterson ended up barricading herself in her flat and blocking the door after Todd sat on her and grabbed her hair, it was said.

She suffered carpet burns to her elbows and knees and damage to a tooth as a result of the brawl.

Mum-of-two Todd 'became aggressive', a court heard (dailyrecord/ WS)

Todd, 33, admitted assaulting Ms Patterson, Edinburgh Sheriff Court was told.

Fiscal depute Karima Stewart said the mum-of-two had taken her children to stay the night with her friend last summer.

The prosecutor said Todd "became aggressive" to Ms Patterson at around 12.30am after they had drunk alcohol.

She said Todd pushed Nicola to the chest "with both hands then grabbed her by the hair with both hands, pulling her to the ground".

Todd then sat on the victim while still gripping her hair, Ms Stewart added.

After managing to get away, the court heard Nicola fled to the stair landing where Todd "grabbed her by the hair again".

Nicola was hauled to the ground with her face held there, it was said.

Ms Stewart said Nicola managed to grab Todd’s hair "in an attempt to get her off".

The court heard Nicola broke free and put two chairs up against the door to keep Todd out.

Police arrived to find Todd "visibly intoxicated", Ms Stewart said, and she told officers: "I never attacked Nicola".

Todd suffered a wrist injury and a 'false fingernail was stuck in her head', a court heard (dailyrecord/ WS)

Defence agent Mark Hutchison said both his client and the victim had been “drinking very heavily".

Mr Hutchison said it was a "fight more than anything else", and Todd had suffered carpet burns on her elbows.

The solicitor said Todd also had a wrist injury and a "false fingernail was stuck in her head".

Mr Hutchison said Todd was studying community work at college and hoped to become a support worker.

He said she’d sought support over her alcohol consumption.

Sheriff Adrian Cottam said it appeared to be a "fight that got well and truly out of hand".

He added: "It’s beyond me how things could have escalated so badly between you and a friend."

The sheriff ordered Todd, of the city’s Northfield area, to carry out 65 hours of unpaid work.
