Woman, 30, found decomposed at home after not being seen for weeks

A woman was found badly decomposed by a neighbour at home after she hadn't been seen for weeks, an inquest has heard.

Chelsea Matthews, 30, was found at her home in Robins Hill, Brackla, Bridgend, last year after a neighbour grew concerned about her welfare.

On Thursday, March 11, an inquest at Pontypridd Coroner's Court was told Ms Matthews was found badly decomposed in her bedroom on February 11, 2020.

A statement read into the record on behalf of Michelle Matthews told the hearing her daughter had been living in the area for six to eight years. She also said Ms Matthews had been taken into hospital in December 2019.

The statement said: "She was in hospital after being admitted for sepsis and pneumonia. She told me she had been sectioned. The ward had stopped her leaving.

"She had wanted to leave to put flowers on the beach because it was the anniversary of her father's death.

"I did have an argument with Chelsea. I hadn't heard from her over Christmas or the New Year."

On January 16, 2020, Ms Matthews was said to have emailed her mother to discuss matters relating to her savings.

After failing to hear from her for a while before Ms Matthews was found, it was said she asked a neighbour if they had seen her.

The statement continued: "I asked her if she had put any recycling out as she was quite particular about that."

At the hearing a statement was also read on behalf of Ms Matthews' neighbour, Daniel Smith.

In a witness statement provided to the court Mr Smith said he visited the property after his partner grew worried about Ms Matthews.

The statement read: "We didn't see her every day, but we would see her every couple of days and we would have a chat with her. We hadn't seen her for three weeks.

"I spoke to my partner and told her I was going to see if everything was ok. I was calling out with no reply."

Mr Smith later found Ms Matthews on the bed and called 999 as well as his partner. Police later attended the property where Ms Matthews was found in bed in her pyjamas.

A pathologist report confirmed the body was found in state of decomposition. Ethanol, diazepam and codeine were also found in Ms Matthews's system, but the medical cause of death was recorded as unascertained.

The inquest was also told Ms Matthews had a personality disorder as well as an anxiety disorder.

Concluding the inquest Assistant Coroner David Regan said: "Chelsea Matthews was found dead at home on February 11, 2020, by a neighbour concerned for her welfare.

"In these circumstances the only cause, in my opinion, is to return an open conclusion, which is the least satisfactory conclusion to return, but it is wrong to return any other conclusion. For that reason I will record and open conclusion."
