Woman, 28, arrested after man seriously injured in street beating

A man is badly injured in hospital after he sustained a serious head injury in a street group beating with people armed with weapons.

The clash in St Helens has been described as a "domestic assault" by detectives who have arrested a woman for causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

The victim was found after police were called to French Street on Saturday night and discovered the man, in his 30s.

He had been assaulted, at about 10.15pm, and had sustained a serious head injury.

During the attack, a car pulled up at the scene, possibly a grey Kia Sportage vehicle, whose occupants also participated in the beating.

Weapons were used, police think.

The man was taken to hospital where he remains four days after the attack.

His condition was described as serious but stable.

A woman, 28, was arrested, was quizzed by police and has been released on conditional bail pending further enquiries.

Detective Chief Inspector Craig Sumner, of Merseyside Police, said: “Although one woman has been arrested, we’re still very much looking to piece together exactly what happened during this assault, which has left a man seriously injured in hospital.

"If you live nearby and saw or heard anything on Saturday night, or captured footage on CCTV or dashcam, let us know.

"We think that other people may have been involved in this assault, and may have turned up in a grey Kia Sportage vehicle in possession of weapons.

"We’re determined to identify all of these people and put them before the courts.

“Extensive enquiries are underway, so you hold any information about the incident, this vehicle or anything else, come forward and we will take positive action.”
