Woman, 24, who took own life 'had the most beautiful soul'

The sister of a young woman who took her own life says she will never be forgotten.

Flur McDonald was just 24-years-old when she died in Birkdale on Tuesday, January 29, 2019.

The pharmacology student had battled mental health problems as she lost both her parents by the time she was 20.

She first lost her dad when she was just 18 when he died in a house fire.

Then two years later she lost her mum in a car accident, leaving her orphaned when she was only just out of her teenage years.

Flur was a beloved aunty and absolutely cherished time spent with her niece Ruby (Flur Mcdonald)

Flur's death prompted an outpouring of grief from her family, friends and people who had never even met her but who were affected by the loss of another bright young woman to suicide.

Her sister, Leah, 35, told the ECHO: "Flur as a person was the most amazing girl you could ever meet. She had the most beautiful soul of anyone I have ever met.

"She was my one and only sister, she was the sister I had always prayed for after having three brothers before her. I prayed and I got Flur. I just wish she had known how loved she was."

Figures produced by Samaritans show suicide rates in women under the age of 25 almost doubled between 2012 and 2019.

Mum-of-one Leah recently raised over £600 for the mental health charity MIND after she herself suffered with poor mental health following the death of her sister.

Leah said she even contemplated taking her life after Flur's death, but has moved past the negative thoughts and is set on helping herself and her family as they all remember Flur's life.

She said: "I've felt the effects. I went to Samaritans in town and used their services. They were absolutely brilliant."

This weekend sees the annual Samaritans Awareness Day, raising awareness of the charity's 24/7 services and encouraging people to listen to how their friends and family are feeling.

The charity have said on their website: "Becoming a better listener can help you support loved ones who may be struggling to cope. It can also help improve your relationships with family, friends, and colleagues. You could help your loved ones open up about how they’re feeling by making some small changes to the way you listen."
