Woman, 20s, dies after being hit by train going from Dublin Connolly to Belfast at Laytown

A woman in her early 20s has died tragically after being hit by a train that was heading from Dublin Connolly to Belfast on Friday.

The incident happened at 7pm when the woman was struck by the train north of Laytown in Meath.

Emergency services attended the tragic incident and the line between Balbriggan and Drogheda was closed immediately.

Local Fianna Fáil Cllr Tom Behan said: “It’s a very tragic incident and my thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends of the young girl.”

Emergency services rushed to the scene and gardai and sealed the area off as the probed the sudden death.

An Iarnród Éireann spokesman said on Friday night the line would remain closed north of Balbriggan while the emergency services attended the scene.

He said it was likely services would not resume until Saturday morning.

The spokesman added they had arranged bus transfers for people on Dublin-to-Belfast services and for northern commuter passengers Bus Eireann were accepting their rail tickets.

Iarnród Éireann posted a tweet shortly after the incident occurred which stated: ‘19:00 Dublin Connolly to Belfast stopped north of Laytown due to incident, emergency services responding. Services suspended between Skerries and Drogheda’.

It is understood some passengers on one of the trains were anxious to get back to the North after the July 12th celebrations.
