Woman, 19, airlifted to hospital after serious crash on A194(M) in Gateshead

A 19-year-old woman has been airlifted to hospital after a serious crash in Gateshead.

The collision between a car and a truck happened near junction two of the A194(M) at about 2pm on Wednesday.

The police, fire and ambulance services were called to the scene and the road was closed in both directions as the air ambulance landed on the northbound carriageway.

Northumbria Police confirmed that a 19-year-old woman was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Infirmary and is being monitored in the high dependency unit.

Two other patients were also taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 2.03pm to a multi-vehicle road traffic collision near Follingsby Lane in Gateshead.

“We dispatched three double-crewed ambulances, two of our hazardous area response teams, a specialist paramedic and a clinical care manager, as well as requesting support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

"Two patients were transported by road to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead.

“One person was transported by air to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.”

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that three of their appliances attended.

The road reopened at just after 5pm.
