Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed Manchester United have two designated penalty takers after clearing up the controversy surrounding Paul Pogba’s missed spot kick against Wolves.
The miss proved crucial and denied his side two points as Ruben Neves’ goal secured a 1-1 draw at Molineux.
But after Marcus Rashford’s excellent penalty against Chelsea, confusion spread as to why Pogba was allowed to take it, but Solskjaer has now clarified the situation.
“We get a penalty, normally we could get another two points. But the ‘keeper makes a good save,” Solskjaer pointed out. “The two of them are the designated takers, it’s up to them who says it’s mine.
“Sometimes players feel they are confident to score, Paul scored so many for us, today Patricio made a good save. You can see the slides on the power point.”
And Solskjaer maintained the situation will not change moving forward despite the miss.
“Not at all, the two have been confident before,” the Norwegian added. “Last week Marcus scored, I’m sure he would have loved to (take this one too), but Paul wanted to and I love players like that (who are confident).”
Rashford then added Pogba wanted to take it, which was key to the decision.
“Paul wanted to take it, it’s that simple,” Rashford maintained. “He’s scored countless penalties for us, it’s normal to miss one. We forget about it and go again.
“It’s simple, if you want to take it, you take it. For me, no problem he wanted to take it this week.
“The confidence is always the same, we practice all week, we score the majority of the time. It’s unfortunate, it’s not on him, it’s a team.”
