Wolves smash transfer record with signing of Porto striker Fabio Silva in £35million deal

Wolves have smashed their transfer record with the arrival of teenage Porto striker Fabio Silva.

Silva, 18, joins the Premier League side in a £35million transfer.

The young forward has inked a five-year deal to further expand the Portuguese contingent at Molineux and arrives with a growing reputation in his homeland, despite scoring just three goals in 24 appearances in his breakthrough season last term.

As first reported in Portugal, Silva and his father, Jorge, arrived in Wolverhampton on Friday.

They were photographed with Wolves chairman Jeff Shi having dinner on Friday evening.

He becomes the Europa League quarter-finalists’ first summer signing, after boss Nuno Espirito Santo called for backing from club chiefs immediately after their defeat to Sevilla in Germany.

Wolves chairman Jeff Shi said: “We’ve been following Fabio’s development for a long time.

"He’s a player that you only need several minutes to see his natural football talent.

"In recent years, Fabio has been developing very fast and now has proven himself in Porto’s first team, which is a top squad.

“Our head coach’s requirement for quality is very high, but he thinks Fabio is an important signing who will help the team immediately this season.

“The timing of this deal is similar to the timing of when we bought Ruben Neves; we’ve waited for the right time to get a high-quality player at the right price.

“Our recruitment team have been watching Fabio since he played for Portugal under-16s and they feel he has always been the best number nine coming through his age group anywhere in Europe."

Silva arrives less than a year after renewing his contract the Estadio Dragao, in a deal which gave him the highest contracted release clause in Portugal at £111million.

His transfer, negotiated through Jorge Mendes, ensures that Porto will be able to stay under the required Financial Fair Play threshold this season.

Mendes went into discussions armed with the knowledge that Porto needed to raise cash to comply with FFP, while still allowing Sergio Conceicao to strengthen his squad.

Wolves have been desperately seeking another striker, having been heavily reliant on Raul Jimenez throughout last season.

Last year's £16million summer signing Patrick Cutrone struggled to make an impact after joining from AC Milan, and left for Fiorentina in January, leaving Wanderers short of another central striking option.

Talented teenager Silva, who has previously been linked with a number of Europe's elite clubs, will help in that regard.

In 2019, Silva scored 33 goals in 39 matches to lead Porto's Under-19s to UEFA Youth League success and Portugal's U19 Championship titles.

He holds the records as Porto's youngest debutant in a league match, youngest starter and youngest scorer.

But Wolves will be wary of placing huge expectations on a player who is yet to play for Portugal's Under-21 side and has just 12 appearances in Portugal's top tier under his belt.
