Wolves star Conor Coady responds to Liverpool and Van Dijk transfer question from Jamie Carragher

Conor Coady last night laughed off Jamie Carragher’s claim that the Wolves defender could replace Virgil van Dijk at Liverpool.

Coady is a well-known Liverpool fan and came through the youth ranks at Anfield before leaving for Huddersfield Town in 2014.

The now England international had just helped Nuno Espirito Santo’s Wolves side to a 1-0 win over Leeds United at Elland Road when Carragher put the 27-year-old on the spot.

However, the Wolves captain laughed off Carragher’s claim and insisted he 'loves' life at the Midlands outfit.

“I can't believe you have just put this to me here! No, not at all', he told Monday Night Football in response to Carrragher.

“I love playing for this club, we've just beat Leeds in an amazing, amazing game. You know what I am like.”

Liverpool confirmed on Sunday night that Van Dijk had sustained ACL ligament damage against Everton at the weekend and would now face the prospect of missing a significant chunk of the upcoming campaign.

The Dutchman was forced off injured inside the opening 10 minutes at Goodison Park on Saturday after being on the end of a reckless challenge by Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

And Carragher has urged Liverpool to "go big" in the January transfer window and sign a new defender following the Dutchman's injury blow.

He said: "Liverpool's next big signing had to be centre-back anyway, and I'm talking about next summer.

"(Dejan) Lovren went, they didn't replace him in the squad. They've only got three centre-backs - one of them, (Joel) Matip, is always injured - and there were question marks getting spoken about (Joe) Gomez.

"So there's no doubt Liverpool had to go big in the transfer market next summer. That was the next one.

"That's got to be brought forward to January the first. Not the end of January, not negotiating with a club - whoever your target was next summer."
