Wolves loanee won't let Man Utd goal define him as he targets new memories at Hamilton Accies

Luke Matheson insists he doesn't want his famous goal against Manchester United to define his career and hopes to create new memories with Hamilton Accies this term.

The 18-year-old joined Accies on a season long loan from Wolves on Friday and enjoyed a memorable debut yesterday, helping the club to their first win of the season with a 2-1 win at Queen of the South.

Accies fans went wild for the right-back's arrival, having seen his sensational volley to equalise against United in a Carabeo Cup third round tie at Old Trafford two years ago while he was at Rochdale, aged just 16.

It's seen as a bit of a coup for the Championship side and boss Stuart Taylor to lure the Englishman north.

And he is determined to make his mark for the Lanarkshire side, while impressing his parent club in the process.

Matheson, who signed a one-year extension at Molineux before joining Accies, said: "I don't want that goal to be the peak of my career and what everyone remembers me for.

"If that's the case, I've done something wrong because I would still have had a 20-25 year career after that.

"I want it to be part of the legacy I leave on football and what people remember Luke Matheson for, but I want to make more memories.

"I'm over the moon to be here.

"I've come all the way from England to Scotland, I found out about the move on Wednesday, was here on Thursday, trained Friday and started Saturday so it's been a really quick turnaround.

"You can't complain when you get a win.

"I didn't really know much about Scottish football prior to coming here.

"Not to sound disrespectful to it, but I am surprised by the standard of it.

"I signed a one-year extension with Wolves and then I'm here on a season long loan.

"When I first signed for Wolves I went to Rochdale on loan to get first team football and then I was in the system at Wolves for six months.

"Last January I went on loan to Ipswich and tore my ACL so that derailed my season.

"The hope here is to get back into the swing of first team football.

"I've got about 45-50 appearances under my belt now and I'm still only 18, so I just want to keep developing as a player here."

Matheson's debut was an impressive one and his vast experience for one so young was clearly evident at Palmerston, as he showed composure on the ball that belied his years.

Not only that, he talks a good game as well and the modest defender isn't one to allow his moment of fame at the Theatre of Dreams to inflate his ego.

He knows he still has much to learn and is delighted to have the experience of Brian Easton and Scott McMann alongside him.

He added: "I thought I played quite well, but you can always do more.

"I don't ever want to come off the pitch and think: 'oh yeah, I was amazing'.

"There's always little things you can improve on.

"I had a cross in the first half that should have beat the first man; second half one of my crosses got blocked, so there's always little details you can look back on and improve on.

"I want to come away and say I did everything I could, but not with an arrogant, cocky mentality - that I was the best player on the pitch who did everything right.

"I'm always learning and now I'm learning from Easty and Scotty about things that I can do better."

Another string to his bow, that took everyone by surprise, is the Matheson long throw.

In the second half, he showed Accies could have a potent weapon at their disposal this season, launching a throw in from the right-wing akin to corner kick.

Matheson admitted: "Everyone was going on about it.

"It's not come out the blue, it's not something that's just happened over the off season, I've always had a long throw.

"But I think I surprised everyone with it.

"I've got it in the locker if the gaffer wants me to use it - I'm ready to launch them in the box."
