WOLVERHAMPTON, England: Manchester City's scintillating start to the Premier League season came to a halt as newly promoted Wolverhampton Wanderers held the champions 1-1 on Saturday.
The hosts were full value for the point, having attacked City in a fashion few sides could manage last season. But they also had luck on their side when Willy Boly's opener was allowed to stand despite the final touch clearly coming off the defender's hand.
City struck back through an unlikely source as Aymeric Laporte grabbed his first goal for the club with a thumping header, and only the woodwork denied the visitors all three points when Sergio Aguero's free-kick came back off the bar in the fifth minute of stoppage time.
While Wolves are happy with the point, they are now without a win in 17 consecutive top-flight matches, beating an earlier streak of 16. They have two points from their first three matches of the season and City have seven.
In the last two seasons the previous campaign’s Championship winner have won both times they have hosted the reigning Premier League champion. Burnley beat Leicester City 1-0 in 2016-17 and Newcastle United overcame Chelsea 3-0 in 2017-18.
It was the first time since Feb 3 that the Premier League champions had failed to win away from home.
