Wolves have no plans for big January transfer spending despite Bruno Lage's cash plea

Wolves have no plans to splash out significantly next month despite Bruno Lage’s pleas to strengthen in January.

Boss Lage said this week he hoped to bolster his small squad in January with up to three additions.

But Chinese-owned Wanderers are unlikely to provide any new major funds to help.

Fosun, the conglomerate who own Molineux, are mindful of Financial Fair Play rules and want to make the club self-funding.

It means Wolves could even wait until the end of campaign to activate their clause to buy Hee-Chan Hwang for £14million as per the terms of his season-long loan.

The clause is valid until the end of May for South Korea international Hwang,25, who has shone with four goals since arriving from RB Leipzig in Germany.

The lack of fresh funds for new signings doesn't rule out loans but raises the possibility of Wolves cashing in on Adama Traore in January if they get a decent offer.

Flyer Traore,25, who smashed the bar in Wolves’ goalless draw with Burnley in midweek, is out of contract in 2023.

He is yet to agree a new deal and has interest from Premier League rivals.

Wolves have previously shown they are willing to wheel and deal after selling keeper Rui Patricio this summer to land Jose Sa.

In 2020 they also cashed in on Diogo Jota and Matt Doherty to finance moves for Fabio Silva, Nelson Semedo and Ki-Jana Hoever.

Lage, who succeeded Nuno Espirito Santo this summer, knows his small squad will be stretched next month when Romain Saiss and Willy Boly are due to play at the Africa Cup of Nations.

He was unable to fill his bench and only had eight subs to chose from against Burnley on Wednesday.

Lage has urged his side to bank as many points as possible in the meantime to build on a promising run of 18 points from their last nine games.

But the side have only scored once in four games ahead of Liverpool ’s visit on Saturday.

Wing-back Semedo has urged team-mates and fans to keep faith with Lage’s 3-4-3 tactics.

The Portugal international said: “They are difficult games but we’ve spoken in the dressing room, we have to be confident because we’re doing a great job and if we play the way we played, we’re going to get good results.

“We have to be patient because we are trying our best and for sure we’re going to give them (the fans) a lot of happiness.”

But Traore, recalled to Wanderers’ side against Burnley after four games as a sub, knows he must improve his finishing.

The Spain international always carried a threat with his pace and direct running which had fans off their seats.

But yet again Traore’s decision-making was dubious as he smashed the bar when he should have squared to an unmarked Raul Jimenez.

The star, searching for his first goal of the season, then did an air-shot after the break despite a lot of dangerous runs.

Winger Traore said: “We are sad because we had a lot of chances to score.

“I was close to scoring but it was not enough.

“At the start of the season I had one v one situations.

“I have to score and that is why i work everyday.

“This is my main goal.

“We have to keep improving and working.

“We are having chances.”
