Wolves fan guilty of making monkey gestures towards Tammy Abraham and spitting on Chelsea supporters

A Wolves fan has been found guilty of racist abuse directed at Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham and spitting a Blues fans.

Josef Smith, of Kingswinford, near Dudley - a season ticket holder at Molineux - was ejected from his seat following the incident during Chelsea's 5-2 win in September, during which Abraham scored a hattrick.

The 40-year-old warehouse worker denied two counts of committing public order offences but was found guilty after evidence of his racist behaviour was heard by Dudley Magistrates.

The court heard how Smith, who now faces a football banning order, made monkey gestures towards Abraham and directed an "astonishing quantity" of spittle at Chelsea fans in the tier below his seat.

One witness told the court: "The Chelsea player that scored happened to be black and he celebrated in front of the Chelsea fans who were below us.

"As he did that, I noticed a gentleman stood up and curled his fists under his armpits in a chimp-like gesture. It certainly looked as if it was aimed towards the players on the pitch and the goalscorer.

"I believed it was a racist gesture towards the player."

Smith will be sentenced today.
