Wolves enter Moussa Marega transfer chase as boss Nuno plots £30million move

Wolves are heading the £30million chase for Porto hit-man Moussa Marega.

Molineux boss Nuno Espirito Santo has made the Mali international a priority summer signing as he seeks to strengthen his striking options.

Nuno was delighted with his side's seventh place finish in their first season back in the Premier League, but wants to reinforce the goalscoring department as he plots a path into the top six next term.

Top scorer Raul Jimenez scored 13 league goals while Diogo Jota bagged nine.

But backup trio Ivan Cavaleiro, Helder Costa and Adama Traore managed just five goals between them during the campaign.

Marega managed 21 on his own in all competitions as Porto were pipped to the Portuguese title by their bitter rivals Benfica.

Porto's failure to be crowned champions will spark a summer clear-out by boss Sergio Conceicao that sees Marega trigger the £30million release clause in his contract, which still has two years left to run.

Leicester and West Ham also want to sign Marega, who cost just £3.5million from Madeira-based minnows Maritimo three years ago.

But Wolves stole a march on their top flight rivals by sending scouts to watch him in his side's 2-1 win over Sporting Lisbon last weekend.

And now they are in pole position to bring Marega to the Black Country in this transfer window.

Wolves are also in talks with Salomon Rondon over a £16.5million switch from rivals West Brom.

But the Venezuelan striker prefers to return to Newcastle United, where he enjoyed a successful loan spell this season.

However, Rafa Benitez needs to persuade Toon chiefs to push through a deal for the 29-year-old. Newcastle bosses are concerned at spending so much on a player who won't have any sell-on value.
