Donald Trump has weakened his ability to influence with his “gift for p****** people off”, according to the real-life Wolf of Wall Street.
After explaining to the Standard where Theresa May might be falling down in Brexit negotiations, Jordan Belfort gave his thoughts on why President Trump is struggling to seal deals in the US.
The former stockbroker, played by Leonardo DiCaprio in Martin Scorcese’s 2013 film, said one of President Trump’s major issues comes with rapport.
He said that the US President's ability to offend is causing him problems and America was "so f***** up".
“My country is so f***** up. It’s such a mess here,” Mr Belfort, who is now a motivational speaker and writer, told the Standard.
“It’s all emotion right now, there’s a deep seated hatred of Donald Trump among 50 per cent of the people here.
“He’s got a gift for p****** people off.”
He said this contributes to why some of President Trump’s policies, such as his border wall, are unable to be approved.
Due to the dislike he has harboured, President Trump’s powers of persuasion have been knocked.
Mr Belfort, who has previously met Mr Trump, said: “You can’t break rapport, you can try to make the most complete case in the world but if you break rapport you can’t influence.
“They can’t look past the things he’s said.
“If Donald Trump saved 20 people from a river they’d say, ‘he’s going to drown them later’.”
Mr Belfort, who voted for President Trump due to his belief in “the policy of less government”, defended President Trump’s wall plan – stating he believes it is not a racist endeavour and that the whole immigration system in the US needs reform.
However, he believes this cannot be done due to Republicans and Democrats being “at each other’s throats”.
Commenting on how Mr Trump could placate the arguments somewhat and help stem some of the issues in the US, Mr Belfort said: “With a little bit of care I think he could get his points across and not cause so much animosity.”
He called on the President to be “more deliberate” in his communications.
But Mr Belort also said some of the relationships might be beyond rectification for President Trump at this point.
The New York-born 56-year-old, whose rise as a broker through to his incarceration for fraud and money laundering was detailed in his memoir and then the award-winning film, previously told the Standard Mrs May needs to align logic with emotion and communicate clearly to end the Brexit "cluster f***".
