Former players and fans of Woking FC have raised over £8,000 on the first day of a crowdfunding campaign to help pay for Scott Rendell’s recovery from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
Rendell, who was top scorer for the National League side last season with 24 goals, was carried off during Woking’s 1-0 defeat at Tranmere on Saturday. He will miss the rest of the season.
The former Woking midfielder Harry Arter, now of the Premier League side Bournemouth, is among the donors, which also include an unnamed England international. A bucket collection during the club’s 2-0 victory over Bromley on Tuesday night yielded £1,234 and has put the club well on the way to achieving their £10,000 target.

“Within 40 minutes of the first game of this season Scott was stretchered off with ruptured ligaments,” said Woking’s club director and chaplain, Ian Nicholson, who set up the funding page. “He needs an immediate operation and will be out for a year.
“We want to cover the operation, rehab and his wages for the year to enable Scott to fully recover,” he continued. “The response through Facebook and Twitter has been fantastic. This is lower league football at its best!
“We just missed out on the play-offs for the Football League. We are up against teams, many of them ex-League, with much more resources but the management, board, fans and players are totally committed to moving forward.”
