Wojnarowski: Warriors plan to offer Klay Thompson max contract

Shooting guard Klay Thompson has been a key piece of the Golden State Warrior’s championship success in recent years and the team wants to hold onto him. Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports that Golden State plans to offer Thompson the maximum contract allowed — five years, $190 million.

Golden State cannot formally extend an offer until free agency opens on Sunday, June 30, at 6:00 p.m. ET. But with news of the Warriors’ plans emerging, Wojnarowski reports that both sides are expected to proceed quickly toward a formal deal.

Thompson went down with a knee injury in Game 6 of the NBA Finals. While at a medical facility to have an MRI, Thompson was concerned about whether he’d be able to play in Game 7 should the Warriors advance (which they did not) and how the injury — diagnosed as a torn ACL — would impact his free agency.

Now, that no longer seems a point of concern. But should a deal fall through, Thompson should be able to claim max cash with another franchise.

Wojnarowski previously reported that if the Warriors fail to offer Thompson a max contract that he would consider meeting with the Los Angeles Clippers.
