Woj: Thibodeau likes L.A., unlikely to join Lakers as Lue’s assistant

Although LeBron James has reportedly made overtures to former Bulls and Timberwolves head coach Tom Thibodeau about potentially joining the Los Angeles Lakers as an assistant, Thibs doesn’t appear to be a real candidate to join Ty Lue’s future staff.

During an episode of Adrian Wojnarowski’s podcast with his ESPN colleague Dave McMenamin, Woj discussed Lue’s hopes that the Lakers could get an experienced assistant like Thibodeau. But it appears that Thibs is hoping to get back into the game with a head coaching gig.

“He loved the idea of getting Tom Thibodeau. Tom loves L.A., he loves being out there, but I’m being told that almost certainly isn’t going to happen. He’s trying to work to become a head coach and he’s owed a ton of money from Minnesota. And there’s always an offset that you have to get back. It was something to sell in the interview process.”

So while it doesn’t sound like Thibodeau will join, there have been other reports suggesting former Pacers and Magic head coach Frank Vogel is a serious candidate to join Ty Lue’s staff.
