Woj: Lakers need second star via trade, top free agents unlikely to join

For nearly a year, the Lakers and their fans have wondered about the potential players they could add to the team with as much as $38.1 million in cap space.

And whether Kevin Durant’s achilles injury has affected this, the timing of the latest report from Adrian Wojnarowski shouldn’t be discounted.

During Woj’s latest SportsCenter appearance, he said that the Lakers must acquire a second star via trade because most of the top free agents aren’t considering them. That would seem to include the likes of Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson, Kawhi Leonard and Jimmy Butler. The odds of Durant going to the Lakers took a small hit after his injury, according to Bovada.

The Lakers now seemingly need to make sure they get Davis if they are going to be able to sell LeBron that they did something right. Luckily for them, the sports books have made the Lakers heavy favorites to land Davis. Getting Davis and subsequently signing him longterm would give the Lakers a strong foundation, but beyond that, the Lakers and LeBron James have few fail safes.

The Lakers are now in the midst of a high-stakes poker game, one LeBron has been careful to keep his distance from in recent months. But should they fail to cash in on the ultimate prize at play, Year 2 of the LeBron James experience in Los Angeles will look a lot like the first iteration.
