Woj: Celtics emerging as frontrunners for Kemba Walker

While it never looked likely that the Los Angeles Lakers had a chance to steal him away, one of the top free agent point guards is reportedly headed to join their biggest rival.

ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Thursday morning that Charlotte Hornets free agent guard Kemba Walker is likely headed to join the Boston Celtics where he will replace Kyrie Irving. It appears that Hornets owner Michael Jordan is no longer willing to extend a super max offer to their all-time leading scorer.

Walker’s eight-year career with the Hornets appears to be coming to a close, with owner Michael Jordan no longer determined to extend far enough financially to re-sign his franchise player, league sources tell ESPN.

Most in the league are expecting Irving to join the Brooklyn Nets, opening the possibility for Walker to slide into the starting role in Boston. While the Lakers have been mostly connected to D’Angelo Russell among the free agent crop of guards, it appears that other teams are getting their ducks in a row as well.
