The Boston Celtics have traded for veteran point guard Jrue Holiday as the NBA’s Eastern Conference arms race heats up, per multiple sources. The Celtics sent out 2023 Sixth Man Malcolm Brogdon, big man Robert Williams III, and draft capital for Holiday, who has a player option left on his current contract after this coming season.
Per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Celtics “were an aggressive suitor for Holiday, 33, and are expected to work to sign him to a long-term deal with free agency looming in the summer of 2024.” On the other side of the deal, Woj reports that Portland is “expected to want to keep Williams to pair with new center Deandre Ayton, but Brogdon will likely be part of additional trade talks upon his arrival in Portland”.
The move is seen by many as likely to catapult the Celtics past the Milwaukee Bucks — whose trade for Damian Lillard made Holiday available in the first place — but not one without considerable risk given the thin state of Boston’s frontcourt rotation.
