WNL Round-up: Title race goes to the final day as Peamount held by DLR Waves

The Women's National League title race will go right down to the final day as Peamount United were held to a scoreless draw by DLR Waves on Saturday night.

Ireland international goalkeeper Eve Badana was the hero for Waves - and for title contenders Shelbourne - as she denied Tiegan Ruddy from the penalty spot before half time.

Aoife Brophy was the guilty party as an Alannah McEvoy cross zipped up off the pristine surface and struck the full-back on the hand.

But the goalkeeper - a mainstay in Vera Pauw's senior selection - spared her blushes as she saved low from Ruddy before springing to her feet to smother the rebound.

The keeper produced a big stop to deny Aine O'Gorman before half time, while Steph Roche was unfortunate to see her 25-yard strike crash off the bar as Peas missed their chance.

Peas boss James O’Callaghan told Mirror Sport: “I thought we were the better side and we created more chances, but we had to be more clinical with our finishing.

“The girls are a bit deflated because they’d have loved to get the three points and win the league, but it wasn’t to be and you get given nothing in football so we have to regroup.”

Three points at home to Galway next week, a game which will also be shown live on TG4, will be enough for Peas to seal a third successive league crown.

Shelbourne, who host Wexford Youths in a preview of the FAI Cup final, have given themselves a chance as they move within a point thanks to a 3-1 win over Bohemians.

Fit-again Jessica Ziu's brace, either side of Jessie Stapleton's second in as many games, was enough after Lisa Murphy scored a goal of the season contender from her own half.

A record crowd of 1,007 packed into Turner's Cross as Cork City finished their season with a 3-1 win over Treaty United thanks to Becky Cassin, Sara McKevitt and Laura Shine.

And a late Chloe Flynn own goal spared Galway's blushes under Friday Night Lights at Eamonn Deacy Park after Kellie Brennan had given Athlone Town the lead.
