WNBA enters the NFT world and you will finally be able to buy ‘W’ highlights on Top Shot

The WNBA is entering the mesmerizing world of NFTs and very soon you will be able to own in-game moments on their online-only marketplace.

If none of those words sound familiar, our own Charles Curtis explained literally everything you need to know about NBA Top Shot, the latest sports collecting craze back in February.

Essentially, thanks to the folks at Dapper Labs, fans were able to legitimately own officially licensed basketball highlights using the Flow blockchain. The market was especially hot earlier this year, perhaps due to a series of stimulus checks amidst a pandemic and corresponding lockdown.

While the initial craze surrounding NFTs has seemingly cooled, the WNBA’s entrance into the space could bring a new set of customers as diehard fans of women’s basketball will finally have a chance to be a part of the community.

Some of the moments available include highlights from the league’s biggest stars like Las Vegas Aces big A’ja Wilson, Phoenix Mercury big Brittney Griner, and New York Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu. But historical players like three-time MVP Lisa Leslie will be included as the league celebrates its 25th anniversary.

Here is what WNBA chief operating officer Christy Hedgpeth had to say about the announcement (via USA TODAY Sports):

“There’s just a huge appetite for the WNBA in general and we have a real mix of our longstanding fans as well as our fans who have recently discovered the ‘W’. So our focus is really on engaging those fans with this product, and I’m sure that the collectors will see it as well.”

WNBPA executive director Terri Jackson added that players in the W were instrumental in pushing for the launch.

Now that it’s officially here, this partnership could eventually lead to another potentially lucrative revenue stream for the league — which is great news for the players and fans alike.

The first drop will be available to purchase for $9 on Friday, Aug. 25, and you can learn more by clicking here.
