Wizards' Wall, Beal too much for Pistons in 122-106 victory

WASHINGTON _ Detroit Pistons coach Stan Van Gundy stresses three main goals when it comes to the defensive end.

_Defend the 3-point line.

_Keep opposing teams off the free-throw line.

_Don't allow layups.

The Washington Wizards were so good at thwarting the first two goals Friday night that the third wasn't necessary.

The standout backcourt of John Wall (29 points, 11 assists) and Bradley Beal (25 points, four assists) led the way Wizards crushed the Pistons, 122-106, at the Verizon Center _ a season high for points allowed by Detroit.

The Wizards (11-14) led by as much as 24 and completely took control with a 38-point second quarter.

The Wizards were 12-for-25 from 3-point range and were 22-for-27 from the free-throw line. Six Wizards scored in double figures.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led the Pistons (14-14) with 24 points.

Wall controlled the action with his end-to-end speed.

Beal gave the Pistons the business with an assortment of midrange jumpers.

Andre Drummond went for 13 points and 12 rebounds and Jon Leuer scored 17 off the bench for the Pistons.

The Pistons got off to a solid start and took a 20-15 lead late in the first quarter on a Leuer post-up.

But after a Tobias Harris three-point play gave the Pistons a 27-25 lead with 6.5 seconds left in the first quarter, Wall zoomed up the floor for a one-handed flush over Leuer with 2.6 seconds left to tie the game at 27 going into the second quarter.

The floodgates opened when the Wizards shot 63.2 percent in the second quarter in taking a 65-54 lead at halftime.

The Wizards also got to the line 18 times, making 14 in the first half.
