Wizards’ announcer has horrible phrasing about Kevin Porter Jr.’s father after game-winner

Let me be clear right off the bat here: It’s possible NBC Sports Washington’s Glenn Consor mixed up who Kevin Porter Jr.’s father was.

If that is the case about the commentator and what he said about Houston Rockets guard, then it’s a really unfortunate mistake.

Let’s back up and explain: Porter Jr. nailed the game-winning three-pointer on Wednesday night to give the Rockets a 114-111 victory over the Washington Wizards, just days after the team suspended him for Monday’s game due to Porter leaving after a reportedhalftime confrontation with assistant coach John Lucas.

It was quite a comeback … but on the Wizards’ broadcast, Consor said, of Porter Jr., “Like his dad, pulled that trigger right at the right time.”

Why would that be particularly shocking and offensive? Per USA TODAY Sports:

Porter Jr.’s father, Bryan Kevin Porter Sr. pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter in a shooting death of a 14-year-old girl in 1993. He was sentenced to 4 1/2 years in prison. Porter Sr. died in 2004 after being shot in a South Seattle bar. The Rocket’s star was 4 years old when his father was killed.

However, there’s another explanation beyond Consor saying such an offensive thing. There was a Kevin Porter who played in the NBA in the 1970s and 80s. Perhaps that’s who Consor thought his father was?

We’ve reached out to NBC Sports Washington to see if that was indeed the case. We’ll update if we hear back. But that would seem like the most plausible explanation.
