Mother and two children confirmed dead in car fire after Parkville collision

Firefighters extinguish a fatal car fire in Melbourne

A witness described the moments after a car hit a pole and burst into flames at Parkville Friday morning, resulting in the deaths of a woman and her two children.

Police say a vehicle was travelling south on Flemington Road when it struck a kerb just before Grattan Street and crashed into a pole about 9:50am.

Firefighters brought the car fire under control but a 35-year-old Cheltenham woman, her eight-year-old daughter and her 20-month-old son died.

Police said the woman left home just before 9:00am on Friday morning and had dropped her two other children at school before heading into the Royal Children's Hospital.

Detective Senior Sergeant Gerard Clanchy said it was believed the woman was on her way home from the hospital when the crash occurred.

"It's hard to find words to describe what's happened here today and what people have witnessed," he said.

"I'm at a loss for words."

Police are still investigating what caused the collision that resulted in two deaths. (ABC News)

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash and its surrounding circumstances, and a report will be prepared for the coroner.
