Witness has narrow escape as homemade device explodes in car

A person narrowly escaped injury after a homemade incendiary device exploded inside a car in Canberra's north early on Saturday morning, police say.

Police and firefighters were called to Polwarth Circuit in Dunlop about 3am on Saturday, after reports a Mazda 323 was on fire.

"The windows of the vehicle had been smashed with a rock and a homemade incendiary device had been placed in the vehicle, causing an explosion and the subsequent fire," ACT Policing said in a statement on Sunday morning.

"A witness to the incident was in close proximity to the vehicle when the device exploded and narrowly escaped injury."

Police said firefighters extinguished the blaze, while the Australian Federal Police Bomb Response Team also attended the scene and rendered the area safe.

AFP Forensics examined the car and seized the remains of the device for further examination.

Police are now calling for witnesses and anyone with video of the incident, including CCTV or dash-cam footage, to come forward.

Anyone with information has been urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000, or via the Crime Stoppers ACT website, quoting reference number 6634404. Information can be provided anonymously.
