Without tender from Seahawks, Tre Madden to test free agency

The Seattle Seahawks agreed to terms with three of their four restricted free agents at the start of the new league year: defensive back Akeem King, defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson and tackle/tight end George Fant.

The fourth was seldom-used fullback Tre Madden, who enters free agency after Seattle didn’t tender him a contract offer before the deadline passed.

Madden played in a career-high 14 games last season, although he was rarely used on offense — he had two receptions for 35 yards and rushed just three times for three yards. Instead, he became a key piece on Seattle’s special teams unit, helping keep him involved despite being in an offense that utilized single-back formations more often than not under first-year offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer.

While Seattle’s offense doesn’t figure to change much next season, it’s likely they will try to bring Madden back into camp thanks to his familiarity with the offense and his strength as a special teamer.
