'Without a doubt' - Rio Ferdinand makes Liverpool prediction and sends summer transfer message

Rio Ferdinand believes Liverpool will be back in the hunt for the Premier League title next season if Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez come back and immediately return to their best.

Since the Dutchman’s arrival at Anfield, the Reds have won the Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and their first league title for 30 years.

Many in the game also view the defender, who is currently sidelined with an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury sustained in last October’s Merseyside derby, as the best in the world.

While Gomez hasn't featured since November having damaged a tendon in his left knee during a training session with England.

But both are expected to return next season, and Ferdinand also believes an extra midfielder should be brought in this summer.

Gini Wijnaldum has also confirmed he will depart the club once his contract expires, with him now expected to sign for Paris Saint-Germain.

A host of midfield options have been mentioned in recent weeks, and Ferdinand believes an extra squad man in that position is needed.

“They need van Dijk and Gomez to come back fit,” the former England man told his Vibe With FIVE YouTube show.

“If those two come back and play anywhere near the level they were playing before, Liverpool will be back in the mix, without a doubt.

“But also another midfielder is probably going to be needed to be added to that squad man.”
