Withdraw power tariff hike, Left parties tell A.P. govt.

Activists of the Left parties staged a demonstration here on Thursday in protest against the hike in electricity charges.

The activists of the CPI and CPI(M) arrived in a procession to the Addanki Bus Stand Centre and staged a protest there. They shouted slogans against the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP), alleging that it had reneged its poll promise of not to hike power tariff. The protesters threatened to launch a massive agitation

“It is unfortunate that the YSRCP government has imposed a burden of ₹4,300 crore on the people, keeping a pace with with the anti-people’s policy adopted by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Central Government which has increased the prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas,” said CPI(M) city secretary G. Ramesh.

“People will teach a lesson to the YSRCP at an appropriate time,” he said, recalling that political parties in power in the past had paid heavily for hiking power tariff.

CPI City Secretary Sd. Sardar said it was unfortunate that the Andhra Padesh government had fixed meters to the agricultural pumpsets. “It is done as part of the suicidal electricity reforms of the Narendra Modi government. People who are still struggling to cope with the economic crisis induced by coronavirus pandemic are not in a position to bear the steep rise in electricity charges which came close on the heels of collection of true-up charges,” he added.
