With Trenton Cannon doubtful, Ty Montgomery will likely return kicks

Trenton Cannon is doubtful for Sunday’s game with a lower-leg injury. That means that Ty Montgomery will likely be the Jets’ starting kick returner.

Montgomery is listed as No. 2 on the team’s depth chart at kick returner. This season, Cannon, the starter, has five returns for 96 yards. Prior, he only had one career return for 20 yards.

In his career, between Green Bay and Baltimore, Montgomery has returned 35 kicks for 794 yards. He has success returning kicks, as he’s averaged 22.7 yards per return over three seasons. That said, he’s also made grave mistakes at that position, which led to his exile from Green Bay.

Last season, Aaron Rodgers had a chance to put his team in the two-minute drill to execute a game-winning drive. However, Montgomery’s rouge return costs the Packers a game and allowed the Los Angeles Rams to eat out the remainder of the clock.

Montgomery disobeyed orders from his head coach Mike McCarthy when he brought a kickoff out from two yards deep in the end zone with 2:05 left in the game and then fumbled, which allowed the Rams to run out the clock and win the game.

He was told to kneel, but opted to run it out.

Now, Montgomery has a chance to prove himself as a return man again. Adam Gase has already admitted that he would like to get more usage out of Montgomery, who has taken only 45 snaps in four games. On the season, he has nine rushes for 31 yards and three catches for 15 yards.
