The Chicago Bears went into the offseason knowing they had to address the quarterback position and bring in someone to compete with Mitchell Trubisky.
Bears fans thought maybe general manager Ryan Pace would try and trade for Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Derek Carr or Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.
Even Andy Dalton and Marcus Mariota were in the conversation to come to Chicago to compete with Trubisky, but we were all wrong. Pace decided to trade for former Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Nick Foles for a compensatory fourth-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Foles is someone who can come in and compete with Trubisky for the starting job and is someone who can help mentor him. Foles knows Matt Nagy’s system, and he’s worked with offensive coordinator Bill Lazor and quarterback coach John DeFilippo in Philadelphia.
Now the question is, do the Bears draft a quarterback after trading for Foles?
Well, the Bears have two second-round picks, a fifth-round pick, two sixth-round picks and two-seventh round picks. I don’t see them drafting a quarterback early in the draft because they have bigger needs, like offensive line, tight end and defensive backs.
Say they were to wait until the sixth or seventh round to draft a quarterback, would they? If a guy like Cole McDonald or Anthony Gordon are sitting there, do they take either one? If they do draft a quarterback it has to be someone with upside and someone they can develop.
