FORT WORTH, Texas _ It was probably not how they wanted to do it, but the TCU Horned Frogs tied the school record for consecutive victories Monday night at Schollmaier Arena.
Their 91-72 victory against Texas Southern marked their 16th straight win, tying a record from nearly 20 years ago.
"I've never been a part of anything like this," said junior guard Alex Robinson, who had six points and seven assists.
But the No. 15 Frogs made it interesting, trailing twice by four points late in the first half against the winless Tigers (0-12) of the SWAC before lighting up a 50-point second half.
Kenrich Williams made two 3-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half and finished with 17 points, and JD Miller put in a team-high 20 on 9-of-13 shooting as the Frogs (11-0) remained undefeated with one game left before the start of the Big 12 schedule.
TCU's win streak includes five games in the NIT en route to winning that championship.
"It'll mean I go watch film tonight of our next opponent," coach Jamie Dixon said with a smile, asked what the record meant. "But it's good. Records are good. That's what we came here to do, to change and improve and make people proud of our program."
Texas Southern stymied the Frogs early with a matchup zone they said they had not seen. TCU, the best-shooting team in the Big 12, was 15-for-35 at halftime and 1-for-6 on 3-pointers. The Frogs entered averaging better than nine 3-pointers per game.
"For a team to get 91 points and not shoot it well, that's a good number," Dixon said. "Defensively, I thought we could have been better. That's what we've got to learn from."
Kouat Noi's layup and free throws from Vladimir Brodziansky got the Frogs even at 39-39 with 36 seconds left in the first half, and Desmond Bane's free throws with 0.1 seconds left produced a 41-39 halftime lead.
Williams made two 3-pointers in a 10-TCU run that led to a 53-43 lead less than four minutes into the second half.
"Winning always feels good, but to come out like this at the beginning of the year is good for us," said Miller, a junior forward who played on a TCU team that lost 21 games two years ago. "We just got to keep it going into conference."
TCU last won 16 consecutive games from Jan. 8 to March 5, 1998.
The Frogs play William & Mary on Friday night with a chance to set a record.
TCU won a school-record 13 consecutive games to open a season in December 2014.
"We still feel like we're the underdog, and we still feel like we have a lot to prove," Robinson said. "That's a mentality we take every day in practice, and when we come out here in a game, we still have things we need to prove."
They've already done it 16 times in a row.
