CHICAGO _ Another violent weekend in Chicago killed seven people dead and wounded at least 49 others, including a young girl shot in the wrist while attending a vigil for a 14-year-old boy killed early Sunday in Austin.
So far this year, more than 2,700 people have been shot in Chicago, according to data kept by the Tribune. All of last year there were 2,988 shooting victims. The number of homicides through this year's first eight months is around 460, nearly 30 killings shy of the total for all of 2015.
The most violent stretch of this past weekend was from Saturday afternoon through early Sunday, when at least 26 people were shot, four of them fatally.
One of those killed was 14-year-old Malik Causey. He was shot to death around 4 a.m. in the 5500 block of West North Avenue in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. He died less than a mile from his home in the 1300 block of North Menard Avenue, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Two people were killed and at least 13 others were wounded Sunday afternoon and evening, including a girl shot in the wrist as she attended a vigil for the 14-year-old in Austin. Family gave her age as 7, but police said she was 8.
Another person was killed and at least 13 people were wounded in shootings from Friday afternoon through Saturday morning.
