With Le’Veon Bell on board, Jets release Isaiah Crowell after 1 season

With the addition of Le’Veon Bell, the Jets’ backfield was looking a little crowded. Now, Isaiah Crowell is the odd man out.

The Jets announced Thursday that they’ve released Crowell after just one season in New York. With the move, the Jets save $3 million in cap space, though they have to eat $2 million in dead money.

After four seasons with the Browns, Crowell came over to the Jets last offseason on a three-year deal worth $12 million.

Crowell had some great games with the Jets in 2018, including Week 1 against the Lions and Week 5 against the Broncos. In the season opener, Crowell had 102 rushing yards and two touchdowns. A quiet stretch ensued after that before Crowell broke out for 219 yards on the ground against Denver. The performance broke Thomas Jones’ single-game franchise rushing record of 210 yards.

However, injuries got the best of Crowell, as he was battled ankle, toe and foot issues throughout the season. After his record-breaking performance, Crowell didn’t rush for 100 yards again. He was placed on injured reserve after Week 14.

The 26-year-old finishes his Jets career with 143 carries for 685 yards and six touchdowns. He added 21 catches and 152 yards as a receiver.

Now, Crowell will be looking for his third NFL team. The Jets, meanwhile, are set at running back for years to come thanks to Bell.
