Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced a new peace initiative for Libya in Cairo on Saturday, after holding talks with Libyan National Army commander Khalifa Haftar.
Sisi, who was also accompanied in Cairo by eastern Libyan parliament Speaker Aguila Saleh, proposed a ceasefire starting on Monday.
He said the plan included a call for negotiations in Geneva, then the election of a leadership council, the disbanding of militias and the exit of all foreign fighters from Libya.
The Cairo Declaration also calls for respecting the efforts of the United Nations in resolving the crisis through political means.
It urged the fair representation of all three of Libya’s provinces in ruling the country for the first time in its history. It stipulates holding transparent elections and the launch of a constitutional declaration that manages the political process.
Haftar, for his part, voiced his support for the Cairo initiative.
During a press conference with Sisi, he hoped the move would garner international support to ensure Libya’s security and safety.
