With draft approaching, Mike Maccagnan openly trying to trade back

The Jets are open for business with the NFL draft approaching.

At the NFL owners meetings in Irving, Texas on Monday night, Mike Maccagnan spoke with the media. The general manager told reporters that the Jets are “very open” to trading back. New York has had conversations about moving back with multiple teams, but nothing concrete has formulated.

In 2018, the Jets traded up to the No. 3 overall pick nearly a month before the draft in order to obtain one of the class’ top quarterbacks. That turned out to be Sam Darnold.

This time around, the quarterback talent in this draft doesn’t come close to touching years past. All it takes is one team to fall in love with a passer, but if the Jets do make a deal to move back for extra compensation, it probably won’t come until the Cardinals decide whether or not they are taking Kyler Murray.

While the Jets have not swung a deal just yet, Maccagnan has already ruled out the possibility of New York trading up for the second consecutive season.

It is hard to imagine a scenario in which the Jets trade back if either Nick Bosa or Josh Allen is on the board when they pick next month. Still, in need of a top of the line pass-rusher, it would take a massive haul to get the Jets to move onto their third or fourth option at edge rusher.

At the beginning of the offseason, Maccagnan said he would explore every possible way in order to improve the Jets roster. Exploring a trade down obviously fits that bill.

With multiple holes still glaring, the Jets would be wise to consider a trade down to recoup their second-round pick in a draft class that is filled with Day 2 talent.
